Lightroom Classic 9.x and Lightroom Classic 8.4.1 work with macOS 10.15 (Catalina) but have these known compatibility issues. You may want to remain on your current version of macOS until these issues have been resolved.
Adobe strongly recommends that customers do their own testing on a non-production partition to ensure that new operating systems work with their current hardware and drivers (printing, and so forth).

If you’re on one of the perpetual versions of Lightroom or Photoshop then you’ll likely run in to some problems. We’ve known this was coming for years, and now it’s here. If you don’t run in to anything today, it’s just a matter of time before your OS, both Mac and PC, (not Adobe) makes your software obsolete. Adobe warns users on older versions of Lightroom Classic and Photoshop, which use 32-bit licensing components and installers, aren't supported by macOS Catalina at all. (I've already run into an issue where I'm unable to open the Adobe Application Manager, which is 32-bit, although Lightroom and Photoshop work fine.). If you're a Mac user who regularly uses Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom Classic CC, we don't recommend updating your computer to macOS Catalina just yet. Are legacy or perpetual versions of Lightroom Classic compatible with macOS Catalina?
No, older versions of Lightroom Classic were neither designed nor tested to work on macOS Catalina. They are not supported in any way for use on macOS Catalina.
Adobe does not recommend that customers using old versions of Lightroom Classic upgrade to macOS Catalina.
Older versions use 32-bit licensing components and installers. Therefore, they cannot be installed and activated after upgrading to macOS Catalina. Although upgrading to macOS Catalina with an older version already installed on your computer may allow the app to function in some capacity, you will not be able to reinstall or activate the app after the macOS upgrade.
Before upgrading to macOS Catalina, you may uninstall the older versions as the uninstaller will not work after upgrading. If you have already upgraded to macOS Catalina, you can use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to uninstall older versions.
Adobe has discovered the compatibility issues listed below with running Lightroom Classic 8.4.1 or later with macOS 10.15 (Catalina).

First, make sure the camera is turned ON. Then, select File > Tethered Capture > Start Tether Capture.
We are working with Nikon to correct this problem.
Tethering does not work with Canon cameras on the latest update (10.15.2) of macOS Catalina.
Update to macOS Catalina 10.15.3 to resolve this issue.

When you try to use eyedropper from the color swatch in Graduated Filter or Radial Filter, the System Recording dialog appears to ask for permission.
This is a one-time dialog asking you to grant access to the application. Once you allow access, you will able to pick color from that application and the dialog will not appear again. However, if you deny access, you will only be able to pick color from within Lightroom Classic.
Earlier in the week, Apple released macOS Catalina. But if you’re using Photoshop or Lightroom CC on your Mac, you may want to put the upgrade on hold. Adobe users have reported numerous problems with Photoshop and Lightroom after upgrading the system. And Adobe itself has confirmed that these two programs still aren’t compatible with the latest macOS.
Adobe pointed out on Help pages of both Photoshop and Lightroom that these two pieces of software don’t work well with macOS 10.15 (Catalina) just yet. In other words, you can use them, but they have a range of compatibility issues.
Lightroom Classic 8.4.1 can’t detect Nikon cameras when the camera is turned on after invoking the “Start Tether Capture…” command. There is a workaround though: you can turn the camera on first, and then select File > Tethered Capture > Start Tether Capture. Adobe notes that it’s working with Nikon to correct this problem.
When it comes to Photoshop, there are more issues users are facing. Photoshop 20.0.6 and later versions work with macOS Catalina, but with a number of hiccups. As for legacy/perpetual versions of Photoshop, Adobe writes that they are “not supported in any way for use on macOS Catalina.”
If you use Photoshop 20.0.6 and later and upgrade your system, here are the issues you might expect:
- File naming options don’t work correctly in the Save As dialog: when you change the file format, it doesn’t change the extension of the file in the name field. Also, when you check “as a copy,” “copy” isn’t added to the file name. If you’ve upgraded the system, you can work around this problem and add the name extensions manually.
- Plug-ins not found or cannot be verified: Adobe explains that, in macOS Catalina, plug-ins that are quarantined will return a Photoshop error that “the file was not found.” Alternatively, you’ll see an OS error that says that the plug-in “can’t be opened because its integrity cannot be verified.”
“Customers that have plug-ins already installed and then update to macOS 10.15 should not see this issue,” Adobe writes. “Customers that upgrade to macOS 10.15 and then try to download and install a plug-in may see failures.”
- Render Video starts but never completes: When you select File > Export > Render Video… the process never completes.
- Droplets don’t work: they launch but don’t run
- Apple color picker causes a crash: If you select Preferences > General… and set Color Picker to “Apple,” the second time you open the color picker, Photoshop will crash.
- ExtendScript Toolkit does not run
- Lens Profile Creator does not run
